Liège botanical gardens - Its greenhouses and arboretum

Liège’s historic and architectural living heritage

Liège botanical gardens, with its arboretum and greenhouse complex, founded in 1816 at the same time as the University of Liège, is the only true botanical garden in Wallonia. Situated just a few minutes walk from Guillemins train station, visitors can admire its arboretum, among the most remarkable in Belgium, with 170 species of trees and shrubs from Europe and other continents, as well as fifteen Belgian “champions” planted as long ago as 1841.

The listed greenhouse complex in Victorian style is a remarkable example of architecture using iron and glass in the style of the 19th century. The exotic is everywhere: vanilla plants, cacao trees, cacti, etc. About 5000 plants from all over the world are kept in more than 1000 m2 of greenhouses and in several different climates. Many of these plants are descended from plants introduced into the greenhouses in the 19th century. The Bromeliaceae greenhouse houses the plant that led to the historical discovery of the fertilization of vanilla flowers by Charles Morren, at the origin of the world industry involving this species.

Guided tours of this historic and architectural living heritage are available to the general public as well as schools from March to October.

During these guided tours you will discover a thousand and one stories in this unique spot. You will be told the story of each tree and plant in this botanical garden.

What’s more, if you have a half day free, there's a guided walk that takes you to Liège Botanical Gardens from Boverie Park whose rose garden and English park are the setting for the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as the Palais des Congrès.

If you want to spend a day in Liège, a tour of the city’s parks (Boverie Park, Avroy Park, Liège Botanical Gardens and Coteaux de la Citadelle) is available. Les Coteaux de la Citadelle is a green space overlooking the historic heart of the “Cité Ardente”, and will surprise you with its charm and diversity.

Three tours are available: a full visit to Liège Botanical Gardens (2h30), a half-day tour of the city’s parks (Boverie Park, Avroy Park and Liège Botanical Gardens, 4h), and a full-day tour of Liège’s parks (Boverie Park, Avroy Park, Liège Botanical Gardens and Coteaux de la Citadelle).
